This dive didn’t start out very well. I had my gear all clipped off to me as I walked down the stairs to the beach. Got into the water with my BC inflated, put on my fins, and started kicking out. Got out a hundred feet or so and decided to take a peek at the bottom. The visibility right near the beach tends to be really good. That’s when I noticed my mask was missing. I’d had it clipped off to my BC and some how between the very calm entry and putting on my fins I’d lost it! I had to trudge back in to shore, go back up the stairs, get the spare mask, get back down, enter, put on fins, and swim back out to meet Jess. She’d been searching but hadn’t found anything. Bother.
The rest of the dive more than made up for it! On the way out there was a seal in the water watching us kick. Too bad we didn’t see it again. We swam all the way out to the orange buoy (well, close anyway) and descended there. There was kelp every where and great visibility. We got the light-rays-through-the-water-and-kelp effect that everybody loves. When we got to the bottom a small walleye surfperch came swimming straight at my face to see what was going on. There were lots of Garibaldi, including a few juvenile. Lots of walleye surfperch. Many sheephead (male and female), lots of blacksmith, schools of señoritas, calico bass, a few giant sea cucumbers, urchins and lobster everywhere, and one or two huge (3-4 ft) fish. It might have been a relatively small Giant Sea Bass, or a really large something-else. I dunno.
The most entertaining part was that the fish were so very curious about us. I guess they’re so used to having divers around that it’s not a problem. We were also moving very slowly, which should have helped. Every time we’d touch the bottom with our hands the fish would come swimming over, looking for a hand out. At one point Jess was hanging on a rock looking at a GIANT sea hare that was only 10 inches from her face when a calico bass came between her and the sea hare to see what was going on!
Eventually we got bored (Jess just motioned she was cold) and ascended. Since we both still had a ton of air I suggested that we try hauling ass back in underwater. I’m pretty sure that’s why my SAC is so high.

So the freshmen are back! August 31st is the first day of classes so everybody had to move in this weekend. It’s kind of cute to see so many young people out trying to be adults. There are so many different kinds of freshmen!
There are the deer-in-headlights kind that really don’t know how to take care of themselves. They can barely get anything done without getting totally confused or mixed up. They don’t know where they’re going and drive very slowly since life is going by them so quickly now.
There are of course some very stuck-up freshmen too. They seem to think they know all about what’s going on. They’ve got a plan! They’re at the top of their game! Then they get hit with one little snag (“No honey, we haven’t made your salad yet.”) and totally fall apart and revert to their deer-in-the-headlights nature.
We (Jess, Charles, myself) went to Pita Pit last night for dinner. We decided to walk through the dorm corridor (between several dorm buildings) and saw some pretty touching events. There were the older sisters dropping off the youngest and trying really hard not to cry. There were moms making sure their sons had all the stuff they needed. There were daughters unpacking brand new TVs from the back of a truck.
Of course, there are the much more prepared freshmen that aren’t quite as silly. They moved in last weekend. They weren’t out with their parents in the heat carrying around boxes of books. No, they were up late Saturday night having a wonderfully loud party while we put together Charles’ tank. Those freshmen will be fun in the coming months, with the rushing and the toga parties, etc.
What kind of freshmen was I? I was the one that didn’t have to move in (lived locally) and just showed up for the first day of class. I had a horrible know-it-all attitude that got checked repeatedly. I thought I was smarter than everybody and some how superior. I think that cost me a lot, but I’ve learned from it.

Today was a hell of a day. I’m not sure why I’m even writing this — I should be in bed. Let’s see if I can collect my thoughts enough to give an accurate description of why today has been hell.
Got up around 6:30 AM, showed up at La Jolla Cove around 7:45 AM. Had a wonderful dive off the orange buoy. There was all kinds of life to see and interact with. The only critter we didn’t see was a seal. Even then, we saw a seal on the way out, just not while we were under. Hung out for a while and had a burger or two. Left and go home around 12:00.
Once home we rinsed the gear, ourselves, and put on fresh clothes. It was already getting hot in La Jolla and it’s even worse by our house. It was easily 85°F with no wind what so ever. Went to Home Depot to pick up some containers and dolly’s to help Charles move his tank, and so that we could move the new 220.
Got home and started calling people to help get the 220 out of Jess’ car and on to a dolly. Mhin and Jess’ parents showed up and between the 6 of us it wasn’t very bad at all. After that we headed to Charles’ house to start breaking down his tank.
We spent just about forever bagging up his frags and getting the tank broken down. We were easily doing that until 6:00. At that point we came home with the first batch of stuff. Stopped to get a quick bite and then went back up to get water and the rest of the stuff. Went back to Charles’ house to get containers for water and loaded up all our cars. Headed out to Scripps for free clean water. Yay!
From there we came back home and started loading everything up. Needless to say that took for ever and a day. We didn’t finish unpacking until at least 12:30 AM. Like I said, I don’t even know why I’m up right now writing this — it’s just stupid!
Anyway, today was a hell of a day. The power never went off at Charles’ house, even though the threat of it is what got us moving in the first place. That’s one less thing Charles has to stress about right now, which is good. Now I’m off to bed to get back up around 7:00 AM to be at breakfast by 8:00. We have somebody coming by at 10:00 AM to look at the 120.

Our second day of fabrication went much more smoothly than I expected. We had to buy some more wood, got to play with the saw, and nobody lost any fingers. All things considered I’d say it was a good day!
The first thing we had to do was put the saw together. Luckily saws are very simple devises and most of the work is done for you! This saw is pretty cool with it’s laser sight and spinning blade of death.
We made pretty quick work of the lumber once we had the saw set up. I can’t imagine having the guy at Home Depot do this kind of nonsense for us. He’d probably go nuts. That’s what we had to do for the TV stand we built in January. We didn’t have a saw and we needed everything cut up. This saw barely handles the 2×6’s. It leaves about 1/8“ connected unless you’re really careful.
The rest of the night was spent driving deck screws into the boards and playing with liquid nails. This stand is pretty heavy and should hold the tank up just fine. The only bits left to do are: measure the cross beams, cut, attach. Put the four pieces together, and level. The guy that was going to buy the 120 flaked out, so the mad rush is no longer in effect. We still need to get it done this weekend, but we can easily go diving now!

I decided to price out a dry suit today and it’s looking pretty pricey. Ranging from $2,206 for the base package up to $2,768. That’s a lot of money that I could spend on other stuff. Then again I’d be really warm when I go diving. I guess I’ll start saving money and see what ends up happening. In the worst case I’ll have ~ $3k saved up!

While reading SCUBAboard today I found a page with some very nice skill videos. What I really like are the alternate kicks that are shown. Everybody knows how to do the flutter kick, but these others look handy. I’ll give some of them a shot on my next dive. I’ve got a pretty good feeling they won’t work very well with my split fins, but I’ll give it a shot!
There’s also some DIR videos, including how to use a scooter and what a DIR air-share looks like. That 7′ hose doesn’t look quite as silly now that I’ve done an OOA Ascent.

After all the fabrication for the tank today I was feeling very macho and decided to do something about my dust cap situation. See, for a regular yoke style tank you can buy dust caps anywhere: they’re just a cheap piece of plastic. But for DIN valves you need special screws, with proper threads and everything. That costs money, making these screws $9 - $22 (plastic vs. stainless steel). My solution costs about $0.96 + 5 minutes.
I have no intentions of paying $9 for a cap to remind me if a tank is empty or not. Sure, the stainless steel screws can keep all your gas from leaking out if the valve gets turned, but I dive air and don’t care. If I were diving with expensive helium tri-mix, I might. Like I said, I just need to know which are full and which aren’t.
To that end I saw some old 1“ PVC caps lying around and thought ”Gee, I bet those will fit.“ They fit like a freaking glove. But they won’t stay on by themselves. So out came the Dremel and a few seconds later I had two holes. I snipped a rubber band and put one end through each hole, tied some knots, and pulled it taught.
Viola! Instant dust cap for less than $1.00!

Our first day of fabrication was fraught with set-backs. But, we worked hard and got through to make some decent progress: measuring. We also bought a wicked saw!
The first clue today could be rough was when we got to Kurt & Marla (Jess’ parents) house and saw that her dad wasn’t home. He was supposed to help us with the design a little and suggest some different joints to use.
Since we thought he might get back home in a reasonable time I left Jess there and went back home to get all the tools. By the time I got back he hadn’t shown up, but Jess had some ideas. We discussed modifying the design to use 2×6’s for the supports and top rails instead of 4×4’s, and using 2×4’s on the bottom to keep the legs from splaying out. Once she showed me the plans and how much simpler it’d be to assemble I was pretty sold. She also showed me (later) the stand she got this idea from.
She’d also had another idea: we need a saw.
So we went off to HomeDepot to see about getting a saw, some lumber, and general construction junk. We exited with: 7 lengths of 2×6, 3 lengths of 2×4, 2 boxes of deck screws, some Liquid Nail, a “T” square, and some safety goggles. Oh, and we bought a nice radial saw too! This thing should be quite nice and make our fabrication shop just about complete.
My little Civic, Betty, looked quite funny with that much lumber in her as we made the short trip back home. We unloaded everything and I got to measuring while Jess foraged. We ate dinner, measured and marked everything, stacked it all up away from the sprinklers (like the picture) and called it a night.
Tomorrow we may get some fabrication time in, but not much. We’re going to a friends house to talk shop and help get her wireless network working better. Since we’ve triple checked all the measurements we should be able to just fire up the saw when we get home and make some quick cuts. I know it won’t go that easily, but a fella can hope!

Jess went to the trouble of making a nice image of the tank stand she wants to build. She then sent off the picture to her parents who have a lot of woodworking experience and know how to make it strong enough. Everything except the bottom four pieces in the picture are 2×6“ lengths. The bottom four (that keep the supports from splaying out) are standard 2×4’s.

Our second day of fabrication went much more smoothly than I expected. We had to buy some more wood, got to play with the saw, and nobody lost any fingers. All things considered I’d say it was a good day!
We made pretty quick work of the lumber once we had the saw set up. I can’t imagine having the guy at Home Depot do this kind of nonsense for us. He’d probably go nuts. That’s what we had to do for the TV stand we built in January. We didn’t have a saw and we needed everything cut up. This saw barely handles the 2×6’s. It leaves about 1/8“ connected unless you’re really careful.
The rest of the night was spent driving deck screws into the boards and playing with liquid nails. This stand is pretty heavy and should hold the tank up just fine. The only bits left to do are: measure the cross beams, cut, attach. Put the four pieces together, and level. The guy that was going to buy the 120 flaked out, so the mad rush is no longer in effect. We still need to get it done this weekend, but we can easily go diving now!
After all the fabrication for the tank today I was feeling very macho and decided to do something about my dust cap situation. See, for a regular yoke style tank you can buy dust caps anywhere: they’re just a cheap piece of plastic. But for DIN valves you need special screws, with proper threads and everything. That costs money, making these screws $9 - $22 (plastic vs. stainless steel). My solution costs about $0.96 + 5 minutes.
Our first day of fabrication was fraught with set-backs. But, we worked hard and got through to make some decent progress: measuring. We also bought a wicked saw!
Jess went to the trouble of making a nice image of the tank stand she wants to build. She then sent off the picture to her parents who have a lot of woodworking experience and know how to make it strong enough. Everything except the bottom four pieces in the picture are 2×6“ lengths. The bottom four (that keep the supports from splaying out) are standard 2×4’s.
